Lately I've been obsessed with patterns. I've been compiling a list of different patterns in my sketchbook for later use.

So, as you guys know, I have the cutest little two year old in the universe (and I'm not biased at ALL). Well, having a two year old and being a creative person can get a little bit messy....
The other day we decided to take my acrylics outside and paint some cardboard...which turned into him painting himself...
Although we did get some cool painted cardboard too...
Overall what I've learned by being a creative parent of a toddler is to let go. Which is insanely hard for any mother. But just imagine letting your sweet little crazy angel loose with a bunch of paints! It's sooooo difficult to let him do all of this, but to be honesty, I'm glad I do. He now plays with more colors when he uses crayons and has moved on from drawing lines to drawing circles (little step but exciting!)

Hey guys. So I can't remember if I mentioned before or not but we have a huge project in my drawing two class. We had to pick a piece of text (originally he said a newspaper article, but when some of us had issues with that he expanded it to any piece of text or quote), and draw what we read.
Well I have been having a heck of a hard time with it! Now, when you guys read this I'll be going to my class and having my fingers crossed that he likes my preliminary drawings. The first quote I went with was a scripture that goes something like, I am weathered yet elegant. The only problem with this idea was that I had so many ideas that I was having issues transporting onto paper and I was getting so stressed out that Thursday night ( 6 days until it's due) I scrapped the whole thing and decided to go with my second quote.
This second quote is from Anne of Green Gables. Marilla (Anne's caretaker) is trying to teach her how to say her prayers. When she explains the Lord's Prayer and everything to her, Anne says how if she really wanted to pray she'd go out into the deep woods or in the middle of a big field and look up into the big blue sky and just feel a prayer. This quote in my head looks like a little girl looking up into the blue sky at the end of a path through the woods. Well, I've been working on that and I wanted to see what you guys think.

So, preliminary sketches, I started out with this. This isn't even on the paper I'm planning on using! I wanted to get the basic layout done on another sheet and then transfer it over. So I started here.
A simple watercolor layout of how I want the piece to look (or similar too. I've decided I want birch trees).
A rough first painting of my little gal.
Some rough paintings of my accents. Flowers and mushrooms and ferns! Oh my!
The preliminary sketch I have so far. Now, you need to know that in the end this will all be in color with (God willing) beautiful shadows and contrast and depth to the image.
Tell me what ya guys think. Does it work?

I took a walk with Grayson the other day and decided to bring along my camera...

I took photos of some of the most inspirational places in town to me, of course there's dozens more which you'll probably end up seeing, but today, these are what I focused on.

So, today I'm going to post my first ever tutorial...exciting stuff! :D Please bear with me and all my pictures!
So, my flowered cards. If you've been on my etsy shop you've seen the ten flowered cards I have on there. Now, lately I've started a new batch of them. Along with the lovely flowers, there is also a word. For this batch it's hello.
Materials:
- Some sort of material for your card. I use ready to fold kraft paper cards from Hobby Lobby. The main reason I use these is that they come with ready made envelopes as well (although to be honest, envelopes aren't hard to make). If you want to use what you have I'd go with a sturdy paper or card stock. If you're using watercolors or sharpies be sure that the color doesn't bleed through to the other side.
- Your text on a piece of tracing paper & a piece of graphite paper. Now, you could totally just handwrite your text (or not even have any text). However, I like to keep the same size and font for each card.
- Small paintbrush, clicky pencil, uniball pen. The paintbrush is for paint, obviously. The pencil I use to trace the text, and pen I use for literally everything.
- Watercolors. You can use anything you want to decorate your card. For this tutorial though, I'll show you how I use my watercolors for my puffy flowers.
I usually start by tracing my text onto my card using my graphite paper.
You should end up with something like this.
Next I break out my lovely water colors (and water bottle I use for portable paint water.)
For my flowers I just go ahead and paint a bunch of colorful circles. I let the color and placement decide itself as I move along.
Once those are done it's time to bring out my trusty uniball pens. (I use different sizes for different things but it honestly doesn't matter.)
First I go in and begin to trace my text.
Then I color it in.
It usually ends up something like that.
Now it's time to begin my flowers.
The flowers I've been doing lately are just a series of curvy lines one on top of the other in a circle. The circles that I painted earlier give the flowers a place to stop and help differentiate between them.
And somehow it ends up coming out like that.
After I finish the front of my card I like to stamp the back with my signature (a homemade stamp made out of an eraser.
And there ya have it! All the deep dark secrets to my funky little cards. Let me know what you guys think about this tutorial! And if you're interested in purchasing any of my cards go ahead and check out my etsy shop in the shop tab at the top of this blog!

Hey guys!
So I just put up my most recent piece on my etsy shop (you can view it here if you like: https://www.etsy.com/listing/203729799/wanderlust-mixed-media-painting).

Lately I've found that I really enjoy doing pieces with words attached. Although with this one (as with my pluviophile piece) I had no clue what word was going to go on them. Or even that I was doing this. I simple painted and then felt where the piece wanted to go. This seems the best way for me to create seeing as I turn out some pretty cool stuff that, while I have no sales yet, I really enjoy looking at.

Just a quick peek at some stuff I'm preparing for my drawing class. Sadly, this is all I have time for at the moment. Hopefully I'll be able to get to some more sketching here soon!

While I know that a lot of artists have to be in complete silence to create, this is not so for me. Silence is actually a pretty scary noise to me. So while I'm creating I'll either have netflix on in the background to watch when I'm getting frustrated with a piece, or I'll turn on some of my favorite tunes. It also turns out that the type of music I listen to while I'm creating effects the piece I'm working on. If I'm listening to something bright and poppy, my colors are usually brighter and my lines are sharper. If I'm listening to smoother music I use more mellow colors and my lines are more wavy and smooth. It's honestly interesting for me to create with music and see what happens.
Some of my favorite things to listen to while creating are:
-The Lumineers (big fan of Classy Girls, Sumbarines, Slow it Down, Stubborn Love, and Flapper Girl)
-Bastille (lately my favorites have been Daniel in the Den, Laura Palmer, and Get Home)
-Hillsong United (really can't pick any favorites out of that, I love all their albums)
-Moulin Rouge (yes I know, a musical. But oh my god I can't get over Elephant Love Medley)
-The Dimes (big fan of Love and Oceans)
-The Fratellis (I love their Costello Music album, my favorite song? Creepin Up the Backstairs)
-Of Monsters and Men (depending on my mood I can just listen to their album My Head Is An Animal over and over and over)
-Arctic Monkeys (I love listening to Dancing Shoes)
So my taste in art music is very varied. Depending on my mood I need different sounds and temperaments for a piece. How about you guys? What's your favorite music to listen to when creating?

It is my personal belief that every creative person needs to be constantly learning. Regardless of the fact that I'm entering an education field, and even regardless of the fact that I'm a college student, I constantly want to learn. I have to learn different mediums and ways to do things. In fact one of the things that excites me about my major is that I get to take every introductory art class that my college offers.
One of my college professors even mentioned the other day how art is one of those professions where you are constantly learning. I don't think there will ever be a point in my art where i will ever stop learning. As an artists, you're constantly taking in information. Be it inspiration, new techniques, or whatever, you never stop taking in this inspiration to make your art the best it can possibly be.
Regardless of if you are in college or 84 years old, it's important to take information in. To grow in the things you love. I know personally I love following blogs that show tons of DIYs and tutorials. These crafty women aren't some high up Martha Stewart entity, which makes me more willing to try the things they post.
I also pin an insane amount of tutorials and projects on my pinterest. Probably more then I could ever get done in this lifetime, but I assure you, I'm going to try! If you guys want to check out my pinterest to get some inspiration or tutorials check it out here: http://www.pinterest.com/crimsonscarf/

I pull inspiration from all over the place. Wether it be from my town, my family, websites I like, or from all over pinterest (to be honest I have a bit of a pinterest addiction so yes, I gain a lot of inspiration from here). Depending on the project I'm working on I look at different things. If I'm doing an illustration I find different artists and sneak around their sites till I find something I like and then attempt to use what they create to help furnish my pieces. Then there are just some pictures that make me want to create. They usually aren't even pieces of art. One of my favorite photos I found on pinterest that just makes me want to get a cup of tea and create is this one:
I found this image on pinterest (and traced it back to give proper credit). For some reason when I look at this beautiful image it just makes me want to create until I pass out from exhaustion.
